"Vegetarians cannot build muscle." You have probably heard this. It is completely wrong. But you do need to be more intentional about your protein sources.
Most Indian diets are heavy on carbs (roti, rice, bread) and light on protein. The average Indian gets only 35 to 45 grams of protein per day. If you are training at the gym, you need at least 100 to 150 grams per day.
Here is how to get there without eating chicken.

The Soya Chunk Secret
Soya chunks are the most underrated muscle-building food in India. They are dirt cheap (Rs 60 to 80 per 500g), easy to cook, and have more protein per gram than most meats. Soak them in warm water for 15 minutes, squeeze dry, and add to any curry.
Do You Need Whey Protein?
Not necessarily. If you can hit your protein targets through food, you do not need supplements. But if you are consistently falling short, whey protein is a convenient and safe way to fill the gap. Read more in Is Whey Protein Safe in India.
