- # The Short Answer...
The fear that cardio will make you lose muscle is real in the gym community. But like most fitness myths, the truth is more nuanced.
The Short Answer
A little cardio does not burn muscle. Excessive cardio combined with low protein and not enough calories can lead to muscle loss.
When Cardio Does Not Hurt Muscle
When you do it in moderation (2 to 3 sessions per week, 20 to 40 minutes)
When you eat enough protein daily
When you are in a moderate calorie deficit, not an extreme one
When you do it after weight training, not before
When Cardio Can Hurt Muscle
Marathon cardio sessions (60 to 90 minutes daily)
Doing heavy cardio on a very low calorie diet
Doing cardio before weights when trying to build strength
Consistently not eating enough protein
The Interference Effect
There is a real phenomenon called the interference effect. When you do a lot of cardio and a lot of heavy lifting together, they can interfere with each other's adaptations. Endurance training signals the body to be efficient and lighter. Strength training signals it to be bigger and stronger. These signals can conflict.
This matters mostly for advanced athletes, not beginners.
The Practical Approach
For most Indian gym goers who want to lose fat and maintain muscle:
Keep cardio to 20 to 30 minutes, 2 to 3 times a week
Prioritize protein intake
Do weights before cardio
Do not go below 1,500 calories if you are doing both
