This question comes up constantly. And the answer is actually simple once you know your goal.

If Your Goal Is Weight Loss

    Do weights first, then cardio.

When you lift weights, your body uses glycogen (stored carbs) for energy. After 40 to 45 minutes of lifting, your glycogen stores are lower. When you then do cardio, your body is more likely to burn fat for fuel.

Doing cardio first exhausts you before you even touch the weights. Your form suffers, you lift lighter, and you get less out of your session.

If Your Goal Is Building Muscle

Skip cardio before weights entirely. Or do it on separate days. Heavy cardio before lifting reduces your strength output by up to 20 percent. That directly affects your muscle building results.

Do light cardio as warmup (5 to 10 minutes max) and leave it at that.

If Your Goal Is General Fitness and Health

The order matters less. Do whatever feels better for you. Some people enjoy a 20-minute run to warm up before weights. If that keeps you coming back, it works.

What About Doing Cardio on Separate Days?

This is actually the best approach for most people. Lift weights on Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Do cardio on Tuesday and Thursday. This way neither workout suffers.

    The Most Honest Answer

The best workout is the one you do consistently. If you prefer cardio first because it gets you in the mood, do it. Progress comes from showing up, not from perfect sequencing.
